It had been another long but productive day at the station, and Jack was more than ready to unwind and spend time with his love. He was all smiles during the drive home and, sure enough, he found Thomas in the garden. Working hard, as usual. He stood there for a moment, watching the man he'd fallen so deeply for, until finally he approached him.

"It looks great here." He wrapped his arms around Thomas' waist from behind and kissed his cheek.

"Of course," Jack smiled, holding his lover close. They'd built a strong trust and communication, which was so important. Thomas was so attentive and considerate.

"Remember our first kiss? The gentleness, the affection. How you stopped me from getting all nervous." It had given Jack the butterflies.

"Of course." Thomas couldn't forget it. Just like he couldn't forget the first time he saw Jack. Which was a little awkward as it was rather crowded with other people at the time. Then over dinner which had been awkward as well but worth it.

Thomas wouldn't have changed it.

"I remember when the door opened and you were there." He rested his head on Jack again.

"It didn't take long for our eyes to meet. I couldn't stop thinking to myself how attractive you are.. All those stolen glances."

He'd always cherish that day, too. It was the best surprise to meet the love of his life during a visit like that.

"The way you looked at me, I'll never forget it either." It sent a pleasant surge through him, being appreciated like that.

"I remember nearly dropping a glass because of one of those looks." Thomas had hated that. He didn't do things like that. Jack changed that a little but at first he still wasn't sure if it was what he had hoped or just that he was a suspect.

He put a hand on Jack's chest. "I don't think we were subtle." Good job he knew the family didn't bother with him that for him.

"I apologize for nearly causing such an accident and bringing trouble to you." He placed a hand on Thomas', holding it there.

"It's difficult to remain calm when a sexy butler was eyeing me like that," he grinned, kissing his husband's hand.

"Oh you would be all proud about it." He started laughing at the gentle teasing of his love. It was endearing really and he enjoyed sharing in their own jokes about it now.

He couldn't stop smiling. "What about you." He poked Jack gently with his free hand. "What about knowing a dashing Detective Inspector was watching you?"

"Maybe. And worried." He laughed with Thomas, feeling so relaxed and happy. "You worked so hard all those years and now you can focus on your own life."

Jack flashed his charming smile and kissed his husband sweetly, humming happily. "It was hard to keep my eyes off."

"I love my life now. I have a home that I share with a wonderful husband I love and who I know loves me." Thomas wasn't ever sure a points he'd ever say that and certainly not be as lucky as he was.

It made him happy that Jack was humming again. "Oh I agree."

"That's right. A husband who loves you with all his heart." Jack couldn't remember being that happy before. Thomas had brought so much good into his life.

The humming came so naturally around him. "And when we first spoke, there was that instant connection. We had a lot in common."

"And one who feels the same right back." Thomas couldn't either.

He loved it, he loved hearing Jack so happy. "I felt that too." All the wondering if he was reading it all wrong out the window and Thomas knew it was okay to be himself with Jack.

He kissed him with all his love, brushing a strand of hair off Thomas' face when he pulled back.

"When I first realized that I prefer men, I felt a bit lost. But you helped so much with that and it's been amazing." Jack could finally be himself, too. He looked into his lover's eyes fondly.

The little gesture was so careful and caring. He felt so lucky that they didn't need words to express their love to each other. It made him want to kiss him again.

"Well, you clearly needed someone to look after you." He started laughing then stopped. "I'm glad I get to be the one you let look after you." He meant that it was special and treasured which he wouldn't abuse that trust and love it had brought.

They had that special connection. There was no need for words all the time.

"You're right. I needed guidance and love." Jack trusted Thomas from the very first moment. He'd been so patient, so gentle. And it made their first night together all the more special.

"I'm in the best hands here."

It felt right and Thomas liked he sometimes didn't have to articulate things to get his point across.

Thomas took Jack's hand and threaded their fingers together. "We both are." He thoroughly believed that they looked after each other just as much.

Jack looked at their hands, smiling fondly. It felt so right.

"I'll always protect you, darling." He spoke softly before kissing his husband again. Slow and full of affection. He ran his free hand up and down Thomas' back.

It did. Thomas would agree that it felt right with Jack.

Thomas looked at Jack. He'd waited so long to have someone want to do that for him. He kissed Jack back, all the emotions that he was feeling then into that kiss. That need for him along with the love. Thomas rested his forehead against Jack's. "I wish we'd met sooner."

"Me too. All those things you had to endure alone... I wish I could've prevented them." He kissed him back, a soft sound escaping. "I would've showered you with love every single day."

He hated knowing how much Thomas was hurting.

"Not just me." He pressed his face to Jack's feeling his eyelashes on his cheek. He moved again to rest his head on Jack's shoulder. "I would have made sure you knew how much that meant to me every day.

It didn't hurt any more. There was a sadness over the things that happened but it was much easier to bare with Jack with him. He wanted to do the same for Jack, knowing he'd not had the easiest times.

"Yeah.. So much happened." Jack smiled fondly, holding his husband safe and close. "If anyone ever tried to mess with you again, I'll have to use my authority."

Thomas had helped so much. There were some painful things in Jack's past that were easier to bear now that he had Thomas. In his present, too.

"Yeah..." Thomas had made his choices. He'd lived with them. He still lived with them. He had Jack to share them with now.

He raised his eyebrow and smirked. "Well you must let me know if and when you do. I'd like to watch."

Jack had some choices of his own to live with, too. The war, the collapse of his marriage. And now he'd met someone who loved him for who he is and didn't expect him to be flawless.

"Of course. I'll be happy to demonstrate." Jack smirked back, teasing his lover with a few light kisses on his fingers.

Thomas was rather fond of Jack's flaws, it made him very much more interesting and lovable and heaven knows he had enough of his own.

He smiled and he gently caught Jack's lip between his fingers. Tugging lightly towards him as he moved in for another kiss. "Mmm excellent. I like watching you work." He pressed his lips against Jack's again.

Jack was fond of Thomas and his flaws as well. To him, Thomas was so amazing.

He loved that playful gesture, showing his appreciation with a deep kiss. "I love doing that for you, darling." There was nothing sexier than getting to share that side with his husband.

"I do rather like it when you take charge and go commanding." He cuddled up against Jack again. "I forgot to ask what did you want for supper?" Because they'd been distracted, wonderfully, but had skipped straight to bed and Thomas was getting hungry. "I can bring up a tray for us." Because he could move countries but still he didn't change.

"I've noticed how much you enjoy that." He kissed the top of Thomas' head. "Those sandwiches and soup you made yesterday were incredible. I think we still have some leftovers." Something simple yet delicious.

"I think I'll go get washed up." Jack already missed holding Thomas when he got out of bed, happy to give his man something to look at.
